Consultation and Supervision with Dr. Estela Beale
Welcome to my website. I am currently offering my services to those psychotherapists and mental health workers from all disciplines who are seeking a consultation or brief supervision from a seasoned clinician.
Whether you work with individuals, couples or groups, psychotherapy requires the therapist to have an open mind, a desire to continue learning and the motivation to seek help when the process gets "stuck." I have been treating individuals, groups and families during my extensive career and I am well-suited to help you with issues of diagnosis and treatment, as well as transference and countertransference. My approach is psychodynamic, which requires educated listening, dynamic understanding and emotional connection; however, all of my training and life experience informs my work.
Professional Experience and Training
As a psychiatrist, I have been fortunate to participate in the evolution of this complex and exciting field. My career began in Medical School at the University of Buenos Aires, in Argentina. Interested in literature, I attended lectures offered to medical students by two inspiring psychoanalysts who were able to convey some understanding of the intricacies of the human mind as captured by major works of literature. At that time it became clear to me that I wanted to be a psychiatrist and a psychoanalyst.
After graduating, I moved to Topeka, Kansas where I completed a residency in dynamic psychiatry, as well as psychoanalytic training, both at the Menninger Foundation. In the sixties and seventies, the Menninger Foundation was a cauldron of intellectual activity. There I had the opportunity to participate in the initial development of group and family therapy, and study gestalt theory, transactional analysis, and systems theory. This eclecticism did not prevent me from maintaining a focus on classical psychoanalysis as it evolved from ego psychology to object relations, self psychology, attachment theory and mentalizing.
Throughout many years of practice I have treated individuals, groups and families. I have also been an active teacher of medical students, psychiatric residents, child psychiatry fellows, psychoanalytic candidates, and other professionals working in mental health. During the last decade of my full-time practice I was an Associate Professor at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. The human predicament of the cancer patient, the family, and the caregivers provided a field in which I was able to contribute my expertise to assisting patients during these troubled times. I developed techniques for working with patients and their families, and I organized programs to train medical professionals, mental health workers and paraprofessionals. Since leaving MD Anderson I have continued to work on a part-time basis at a local community clinic in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where I assess and treat children, adolescents and adults.
"Dr. Estela Beale is an outstanding child/ adolescent and adult psychiatrist, with a record of accomplishment in private practice, public mental health, and academic psychiatry settings.
I have been privileged to work with Dr. Beale in the care of cancer patients. She is an excellent clinician and an enthusiastic medical educator. She is a generous colleague and mentor. In the time of our work together Dr. Beale was a valuable source of advice and counsel and did much to contribute to the professional development of junior colleagues and trainees."

Professor and Chair, Department of Psychiatry at MD Anderson
Dr. Beale has been my clinician supervisor for about 3 years. I began to work with her at the start of my encore career as a psychodynamic psychotherapist.
Dr. Beale is an excellent mentor regarding both medical and mental health areas of care. My practice consists mainly of caring for the chronically mentally ill, most with various psychotic features. Working together, as student and mentor, she has enabled me to consolidate my understanding of bio-psychosocial concepts into effective therapy for my clients.
Dr. Beale integrates a sound psychoanalytical foundation, while encouraging a creative approach to individual cases. I highly recommend Dr. Beale as a care consultant, especially for those working on a creative level with difficult clients.
